Ochils Hill Run

24 FEB 2008
One of my favourite long hill runs. Start at Dollar, head up Dollar Glen, past the castle, along Glen Quey, turn up to Innerdownie, Whitewisp, Tarmangie along to Ben Cleuch, turn back to Andrew Gannell past the Maddy Moss and then up King's Seat and finally all down hill. 4 hours and 1345 metres ascent.

National Cross Country Championships

Callander Park, Falkirk - 23 February 2008

My 20th run at "The Nationals" and still bloomin' hard work, I really should stop one year - give me the Carnethy Hill Race any day! 3 laps of Callander Park in Falkirk - not too much mud, hardly any hills (110 metres ascent) but lots of slow hard effort - heart rate at average of 162 bpm (90% max) for the whole of my 52 minutes plod. Had my usual first lap of "oh God I'm knackered and useless, just drop out", steadied a bit for the 2nd lap and then hung on a bit on the last lap to catch Steve Bell masquerading as a Helensburgh AC runner but just failed to catch Simon. New Westies recruit Owen led us home followed closely by Nigel and Chris, while Simon was just ahead of me and Pete completed the team. Mark Pollard of Inverclyde AC won the race in about 38 mins for the 2nd year in a row. Earlier the Westies Wummin had ran well, Ellie leading home Cat, Pauline and Pat. Suffice to say the soup and chips that Cat treated us too afterwards were probably the highlight of the day. Will I be back next year for my 21st, mmmmm?

Carnethy Hill Race

Fantastic weather, fantastic scenery and fantastic friends everywhere - what a race! Personally I was really chuffed with my time of 65min 45sec and 126th of 461 runners, that was faster than the last 2 Carnethies. I had a reasonably fast push along the swamp to get a decent position going through the narrow Charlie's Loup, before settling down for the hard heathery slog up to Scald Law. Places were well sorted by here, Chris, Manny, Dave and Andy well out of sight, with Graham just ahead, full of training for his forthcoming Marathon de Sables. I ran Ok from there up and down the next few hills and slid down the icy north face of West Kip at halfway. My pal Gordon of Lomond Hillrunners came past on the runnable trod down to the Howe but he spurred me on a bit, as is often the case. I went past him momentarily only for him to ease past on the sharp wee descent at the bottom where Steffen also passed me. I usually try and push a bit on the final ascent of Carnethy, and aided by a caffeine filled gel sachet and some mental bullying, I managed to gain a few places and get away from Steffen and Gary Thompsett and even re-pass Gordon. Up to Carnethy in about 57min I was hoping that my contact lenses wouldn't water too much in the chilly breeze for the tricky descent, and fortunately they didn't. I made a few places and lost a few, Gordon passing me with the benefit of his long legs but I held off Steffen on the slog back across the swamp to finish my 19th Carnethy. A great day and a big thanks to Carnethy Hillrunners and all theor helpers and marshalls for putting on such a superb event, and to a great turnout of Westies too.

Westies Loch Lomondside Run

SUNDAY 10 FEB 2008

A dander up the West Highland Way from Balmaha to just beyond Rowardennan and back again. Jason and I managed 3h 40m, about 20 miles; Chris and Ellie about 4hrs and 26 miles and Johnstone about 3hrs. Followed by tea and toast at Jason's.

Down at Damon's

1-2 FEBRUARY 2008
I headed down through the non-existent forecasted blizzards on Thursday night to Damon's place outside Kelso. Friday was spent in the freezing, un-heated (till 4pm) new hoose. Damon was Mr DIY personified, while I managed some manual labouring (of sorts) for him and varnished a few doors. I also made the tea. On Sat morning Damon and I enjoyed a cracking 77 min run in the snow covered hills near Morebattle, before he had to go childminding. I headed off and managed a lovely 3h 40m run along the St Cuthbert's Way from Maxton to the top of the Eildons at Melrose and back again.

Friday's Blog reports =
Today we mostly drank tea. And in between the blizzards JD plumbed in the central heating system, hung a few doors, cut and fitted the sink in the utility room and generally showed off his amazing DIY skills. I mostly danced all day to the groovy sounds of the Dixie Chicks, Michael McGoldrick and Show of Hands. Jim the plumber stopped the CO2 from poisoning us all and the neighbours rode in through the saloon doors on their Clydesdale horses to borrow a bag of sugar. Anna painted a few muriels (I think he means murals - ed) of flying ducks on the wall and then dashed off to save the twins from the mighty blizzard that was sweeping through the metropolis of Morebattle. JD bravely tested out the WCs in every room and judged them nae bad. Fuelled by peanut butter and cheese pieces at lunch we then ran 26 miles home over the Cheviots in time for a BBQ and some midnight trampolining. JD is back off to the smoke tomorrow and I don't know how I'll cope.

As you may have guessed, JD wrote that lot! Big, big day, when the disaster of yesterday was dispelled. My fix for the central heating worked an absolute treat, and by mid-morning I had all the radiators connected, with just a couple of very slow drips for which I needed a roll of PTFE tape. Jim had filched it all, so they had to wait until he rocked up at 4pm. In the meantime JD and Anna varnished a load of the internal doors (and pretty nifty they look, too) and JD and I cut the utility-room worktop and assembled it all.
Jim commissioned the boiler and did the CO2 test, and by the time we all left a little after 5pm, the place was almost approaching warm. What a difference - it's really starting to feel like a home!
The floor is continuing to dry slowly, and I think, but can't be sure, that the bumpy floor is starting to flatten a little as the swollen joints shrink back.

Glenmore Club Weekend at Newtonmore

26-27 JANUARY 2008
A weekend with my walking club in Newtonmore. On the way up I enjoyed a lovely 14 mile run up Glen Tilt. There was the usual great Burns Supper shenanigans on Sat night, though I am ashamed to admit I was first to bed at 10.30! On Sunday climbed the Graham Croidh-la (640m) in Glen Tromie with Colin, Monica, Bumper, Ian and Dave. All the snow had disappeared and there was a mighty amount of flooding everywhere.
