S'no Fun

SAT 19 MARCH 2011

Actually, it was lots of fun. John and Paula were out for a bit of navigation practice for their impending Mountain Marathon debut, and I was tagging around for fun, pretending (unsuccessfully) that I knew a bit about hill navigation. We headed off to the top of Loch Lomond to meander round Meall an Fhudair (764m) using an old LAMM map with some controls shown on it. Once on the hill proper there was tons of snow, making progress slow but fun, gaining the ridge via a steep gully that provided some hairy few minutes as I kicked stepped my way up with my fell shoes. Once on top it was a case of cartoon cantering down deep snow covered slopes, finding innumerable deep hidden holes that on occasion almost swallowed us. A grand few hours, rounded off by mobile karaoke on the way home to John's classy CD of "Hits From The Pin Up Stars of the 70s and 80s".

(reverse in) Run Skyline Pentlands

SAT 5 MARCH 2011
17 miles 5,500 feet

Garmin route

Had a grand and grafting trip round the Pentlands with Stuart Barrie and John Telfer. Followed the Pentlands Skyline Race route, but anti-clockwise and the reverse of the usual race direction. Took just over 4 hrs, including a wee side trip to visit Castlelaw Fort and Earth House, which Stuart proclaimed was finer than his Galashiels but'n ben and had to be draggged out of screaming. Thanks guys for a fine day out.

Mamores Mountaineering

Spent a great weekend in Kinlochleven with the Glasgow Glenmore Club. Started at Mamore Lodge, along the WHW a bit, then up Sgurr an Iubhair, Am Bodach (with hairy alpiine descent on crampons) then over Stob Coire a' Chairn and down the stalkers' path.

Then on Sunday a fab day up Beinn na Caillich, an almost Corbett, near Kinlochleven.
