Culter Reservoir Hill Run

SUNDAY 29 MARCH 2009
13 miles 4000 feet

A lovely plod with Gordon Pryde round the Lanarkshire hills near the village of Culter. Sunny but with a chilly wind and great views. Tea and a toastie in Biggar afterwards.

Wuthering Hike Trail Race

Photos

SAT 14 MARCH 2009
32 MILES 1745 METRES

My 9th attempt at this Yorkshire classic was, of course, slower than before (bit of a trend here) but no less enjoyable. Myself Moira and Louise Provan headed down early on Friday for a relaxing drive down, getting there in plenty of time for a nice pub meal and pint (one only!) in the White Lion in Haworth. The race comprises 32 miles traversing gritstone moors around Haworth, Todmorden and Hebden Bridge. It throws in wide tracks, reservoir dams, bits of tarmac - some very steep, muddy farm tracks, cobbled lanes and lots of wide open scenery. Originally a long distance walkers event, KCAC now run it excellently as a full blown trail run. About 250 of us set off from Main Street Haworth and ambled off into the moors, no one being in a particular hurry, except for the elite few out in front, including West Highland Way record holder Jez Bragg who went on to win. A stiff breeze slowed us down in the first third, but helped us along towards the end when we most needed it. After a nice leisurely start I settled into a good steady pace, trying not to let my minor chest bug get any worse. With about 7 or 8 miles to go I started to pick off some runners who were flagging a bit and finished feeling strong in 5h 31m for 60th place and 130% of the winners time, which I was chuffed about. The post run hospitality was great, as was the nice long bath back at the B&B, before we headed into Haworth for some well earned refreshments – good food and great Jennings’ beer. On Sunday we enjoyed a fine touristy walk in Malham. I’ll definitely be back next year for number ten.

On Sunday we had a lovely walk in Malham, up the waterfall in the amazing Gordale Scar, onto the limestone pavements and down the impressive limestone cliffs of Malham Cove. Photos
